Global Connections And Communication
A few weeks ago, Evans Haule (Kiswahili Teacher) and Mikey McKillip (ICT Coordinator) connected with a group of teachers working together from different parts of the world to help students in the UK learn to sing the song “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” in different languages. We used Skype to connect with these students. Evans was kind enough to spend time teaching students how to translate and sing a portion of this song in Kiswahili.

This project is just one example of our ICT PYP Skills for Inquiry: Communicating
“Communicating is the exchange of information with various audiences using a range of media and formats. Effective communicators contribute to cross-cultural understanding, make informed choices when deciding on tools to articulate meaning, and provide relevant, significant feedback to others.”
- cultural communication exchange – global connections, language exchange
- different media formats: skype, blogs, musical performance recorded and hosted on youtube
- feedback to teachers and students using comments on blogs

Monster Exchange – Global Connections
Monster Exchange Project (Technology Integration Project)
http://www.monsterexchange.org/
“Monster Exchange is designed to encourage the development of reading and writing skills while integrating Internet technology into the classroom curriculum. Classrooms from a variety of schools worldwide are paired together; the students in each classroom are split into groups, each of which designs an original picture of a monster. The students must then write a description of the monster. The partnered classes then exchange their descriptions via e-mail and the Internet. These students are then challenged to use reading comprehension skills to read the descriptions and translate them into a monster picture. The true challenge involves creating a redrawn picture as close to the original picture as possible without looking at the original and using only the written description of the monster.”

Technology Integration Quiz
What do we mean when we use the term ICT/Technology Integration?
At IST we believe that ICT should be considered a tool by teachers and students to further learning and to enhance communication. ICT should not be thought of as a discrete or stand alone class subject, but a means to acquire, analyze and present information and knowledge in their subjects.
How are you doing using ICT Integration to enhance student learning in your classroom?
